The Mitsubishi Outlander is cool not for being pompous, but for getting the job done with no ‘frills. It is the best option for you if you desire a non-pretentious three-row crossover SUV with the room and power to ferry seven passengers effortlessly. The Outlander is budget-minded but not cheap. It is well built with superior craftsmanship and high-quality material.
For 2018, the Japanese automaker updates the Outlander’s front and rear fascias and interior aesthetics. The new Outlander comes with a wider list of standard tech, safety, and comfort features. Also, a new Touring package is available on the top SEL and GT models. Notably, the 2018 Outlander includes a mew-for-2018 plug-in-hybrid model in its lineup.
Driving the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander is sure to earn you jealous glances in Baton Rouge and the greater Louisiana area. The new model characterizes a restyled front and rear bumper, a more expressive LED lighting, and sharper lines and contours than its predecessors. It is stylish with 18-inch alloy wheels and expensive-looking chrome accents.
All but the range-topping GT model employ the standard 2.4-liter I-4 engine that makes 166 horses and 162 lb-ft of torque. A continuous variable transmission (CVT) complements the 4-cylinder mill and sends power to the front wheels, and optionally to all wheels. EPA estimates that the combination returns 25/30 mpg city/highway with FWD and 24/29 mpg with AWD.
The performance-oriented GT trim ups the ante with an exclusive 3.0-liter V-6 powerhouse that cranks out 224 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. The V-6 utilizes a six-speed automatic that drives all wheels standard. In various tests, the Outlander 2.4 SEL (AWD) made a sprint from zero to 60 mph in under 9.0 seconds – an impressive time for its segment. It also came to a complete halt from the same speed at a respectable 119 feet.
The 2018 Outlander offers ample seating space on all three rows. It provides plush seats, good-size door pockets, and an intuitively-designed dash with well-placed dials and controls. The cabin is exceptionally quiet and cushioned from wind and tire noises. Whether shopping in Baton Rouge, LA or taking a trip to other parts of Louisiana, the Outlander will serve you well thanks to cargo space ranging from 10.3 to 63.3 cubic feet.
The interior is aesthetically pleasing with the leather-wrapped shift lever and steering wheel and leather-trimmed seats. The base ES gets a height-adjustable driver seat, a 50/50-split third-row seat, and a folding second-row with a built-in recliner. Moving up to the SE and other trims earns you a power driver seat, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, premium leather trims, a sunroof, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The NHTSA accorded the AWD variant of the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander its highest five-star rating, while the FWD variant managed a four-star overall safety rating. The IIHS considers the 2018 Outlander a Top Safety Pick+ (the top-most designation) due to its exceptional performance in crash tests and front crash prevention evaluations. Apart for the standard array of airbags, the SUV includes various driver assist features such as rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, a forward collision mitigation system, a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.
Technophiles will like the plethora of standard and optional tech features. A 7.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, heated side view mirrors, dual-zone climate control, voice controls, a six-speaker sound system, a rearview camera, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and a CD player are all standard.
